I found this great grey Mo-Air (Eileen Fisher's fancy way of saying mohair) shrug in her store at the Stanford Mall. It fit perfectly and then I saw the price--$258...not so perfect.
So what does any law abiding knitter do? That's right--she buys it, counts the stitches per inch (5 in this case), finds the perfect yarn (Rowan Classic Yarns Baby Alpaca DK), draws a pattern, takes pictures and then--returns it. I can't help myself. My shopping days are filled with me constantly thinking (mostly knowing) that "I can make that." So I shall keep everyone posted on the progess of the grey shrug.
JHU update: The sheets are still in Pennsylvania and I think they had a "welcoming" party for the girls' field hockey, volleyball and soccer teams at "109" ( the term used when referrring to the water polo house at Hopkins). They have a house?! More on that later. He wants us to bring all his posters--what about his dress shoes and grey flannels not to mention his blue blazer? Apparently those clothing items were not on his mind when he called. I'm packing them anyway--one never knows when grey flannel will come in handy :)
Fun blog -- I love it! I cannot wait to watch your shrug progress and would love to make one myself.

Darn it. I made a mental sketch at the store and saw that they bound off 2" at the armhole. Back at home, I thought it would look somewhat weird and made my sleeve conical. (See picture at http://badmomgoodmom.blogspot.com/2006/10/fall-shrug-fo.html.)
The EF way is less bulky and not at all weird-looking at the armhole. Next time.
